| Botanical name: Matthiola cultv. "Cinderella Stock" Family name: brassicaceae Common name: Stock Comments: Last year I discovered "Cinderella Stock". A dear wee mite which reaches only 25cm in height and immediately thought that the form and colours would compliment hyacinths perfectly. In my minds eye I see drifts, beds and rockery pockets filled with these lovely flowers but the expense of the bulbs coupled with the short flowering season, makes this impossible in a large garden. "Cinderella Stock" is the answer, they bulked up our patches of bulbs perfectly and then covered the spent flowers and leaves prolonging the garden effect until early March and this in one of the hottest summers Coromandel has had in years.
I was very impressed with their summer flowering as stock is a member of the cabbage family and doesn't usually do well in full summer heat. Don't forget they appreciate good rotted cowsh or horsh with dolomite lime and potash for strong growth, colour and perfume.
From a florist perspective: They really are only of use in wired work, corsages/bowls or tiny posies where their stong perfume is really special.
