Noeline & Derek's Garden

Welcome to our garden. We hope you enjoy having a look around. It is an average sized suburban garden in Tawa (north of Wellington) which gently slopes upwards in various levels. Directly at the top of the garden runs S.H.1. It is a garden which is heavily planted with native trees, nearly 300 roses, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and many other trees and shrubs, including annuals and perennials - full of rooms, nooks and secret sitting areas with several water features. Because of this we are almost completely unaware of any traffic noise from the motorway.

In the back garden is a tiled deck with a raised wooden decking which I line with containers of red and purple petunias. The standard rose (also in a container) is the pink Flower Carpet (Apple Blossom). the structure beyond is a covered-in barbeque area (great for all weather cooking).

Beyond that again is a small lawn with gazebo and fish pool with waterfall which has a yellow waterlily and purple Japanese irises growing happily.

A photo of the waterfall at night. the garden is completely lit.

Another view of the waterfall and pink vireya rhododendron. the "local drinking hole" sign is because our cats use it for just that, drinking and totally ignoring the fish.

To the right of that again is "the circle", a tiled area which has outdoor speakers in amongst the bushes for soothing music while we listen to the splashing of the waterfall and take in the scents of the hundreds of roses thoughout the garden on a warm summer's evening. In the foreground is a rhododendron in a container. The roses over the archway are the pale apricot "Breath of Life" and "Iceberg".
Off the circle is a tiny bushed area we have cut in amongst ferns and pungas and built a seat. This has it's own lighting

On the lower tiled deck is a brick semicircle walled garden with a small pond and fountain. Overhanging it is the rose "Wedding Day".

Again on the lower decking I have made this container garden. Simply a large pot upside down with a large round shallow container on top and planted with lobelia of various blues and allysum. Sitting in that is a beautiful piece of pottery for a water feature. Wonderful to look out on from the conservatory on a wet day.

At the very top of the garden is the edible garden. The pink rose is "Albertine" which covers the side of the hothouse, in front of that is "Dublin Bay". My shade house of orchids is just below. The roses in the foreground are "Colourbreak" and the white "Pascali", both grown from cuttings just put straight into the ground at pruning time, as are many of our roses.
